During the 2019 Taiwan Design Expo, the exhibition hall that has as its theme the agriculture of Pingtung county – PINGTUNG THING– is a symbol of the cycle of starting work at sunrise and stopping work at sunset and a play on the words “East” and “West”. The exhibition hall is divided into two major colors to represent “sun yellow” and “day white”. We decided to use the indispensable element of agriculture, “cardboard cartons”, to transform the concept of exhibition planning into materials so that it may be extended in space. The exhibition area is divided into three parts so that the visitors focus on different themes in different stages. The construction of the space is intended to incrementally show the materials used in the development of agriculture from traditional methods to modern methods.
The first area shows the most primitive agriculture -- fresh fruit, soiled rain boots and other tools well worn by daily use. We enlarged the cardboard cartons and sacks used for packaging traditional agricultural products into containers that house these exhibits. Each of the six big trucks represents six kinds of products, allowing people to freely shuttle between them and discover their surprises, just like unpacking a box starts from the most realistic point of view and continues to become a way to explore the follow up story.
Next, the theme of the second area is a collection of local oral history, introducing the story of the characters through different short films. We use the TV wall elements that often appear in marketplaces to build a rectangular frame from irregular iron parts, and place multiple screens as the doorframe of the “supermarket”. We use the most direct visual perception and interview recording to tell the story.
